Inside Norfolk: Exploring the World’s Largest Naval Base

Norfolk stands as the world’s largest naval installation and the primary harbor for the US Atlantic Fleet. Blogger Masterok shares a captivating photo series that reveals the stronghold of American aircraft carriers and the many warships berthed here.

Set on the Atlantic coast southeast of Hampton Roads Bay, Norfolk Naval Base spreads over the water, hosting roughly 75 US Navy vessels. Among them are five nuclear-powered carriers and five additional flattops, underscoring the base’s pivotal role in American sea power.

The base operates under the US Navy’s Second Fleet, which safeguards the surrounding seas. Covering more than 26 square kilometers, its approaches reach depths of nearly 14 meters, allowing even the fleet’s heaviest combatants to dock with ease.
